As part of its Medium Term Strategic Framework, the National Department of Health released its priorities for the period 2009 to 2014. Also known as the 10 Point Plan, the priorities are intended to assist the country in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and monitoring improvements in the health system. This document covers the ten priorities of the Plan and highlights some of the salient activities which are targeted for implementation within the period 2009-2014. The purpose of this document is to highlight the core tenets of the Plan and not to review or discuss the extent to which the key activities and deliverables have been met.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The South African Department of Health, commonly referred to in South Africa as the National Department of Health (NDoH), has prioritised improvements in the health of mothers and children through strategic health programme interventions. To improve the capacity of health districts performing poorly with regard to mother and child health indicators and to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) NDoH has identified and prioritised 18 health sub-districts across South Africa as districts that need interventions for improvement.

HST Conference: 10-11 October 2007, Indaba Hotel, Fourways, Johannesburg
The 2007 HST Conference, Strengthening Health Systems in Southern Africa 1992-2007, provided a platform for a critical review of HSTs contribution to health research utilization in policy making and an understanding of information use to inform management decisions, to improve the quality of health service delivery. The conference also highlighted the challenges to equitable access to health services by poor and rural communities.

This booklet focuses on how to implement clinic supervision. Although it does not go into any great depth or detail, it aims to assist managers, programme coordinators, clinic supervisors and facility managers find their way in the day to day supervision of quality of care. The Nine Step Guide addresses implementation in an easy to follow method, using a number of tools and practical examples gathered from the districts where HST has worked over the last three years.

This report summarizes the results of a survey of 771 AIDS-affected households in different parts of South Africa. The households were randomly selected from the client lists of non-governmental organizations providing support to AIDS-affected households in the regions where the survey was conducted. The survey and this report are an attempt to document the impact of HIV/AIDS on South African households. Although it is not representative of all AIDS-households in South Africa, the report provides a snapshot of the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on already poor families. HIV/AIDS is affecting everyone in South Africa. There are many organisations and individuals working hard to fight the spread of the virus. In 2000 the South African government introduced a programme offering prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services at 18 pilot sites.The programme is an important part of the country s response to the epidemic. This booklet provides some basic facts about the effects of the medicine, Nevirapine, and formula feeding in a PMTCT programme. It then goes on to summarise the interim findings of an evaluation of the pilot sites.

This report provides case studies from 9 PMTCT pilot sites in six provinces. These case studies were conducted by Health Systems Trust researchers and external consultants between September 2001 and March 2002 as part of the national evaluation of the 18 PMTCT pilot sites. They were used to inform the first official interim report of the national PMTCT pilot programme that was published in February 2002.
