The theme of this 13th edition of the Review, launched in December 2008, is Primary Health Care in South Africa: A review of 30 years since Alma Ata. The SAHR 2008 chapters focus on critical issues in Primary Health Care. The Review includes a national and international perspective of Primary Health Care, and focuses on areas such as policy and legislation, determinants of health, lifestyle, infectious diseases, mental health, maternal and child health, nutrition and environmental health. The SAHR reviews issues around human resources, finance, and information. It also looks at research on health systems, the role of the private and non-governmental organisations in Primary Health Care, and ends with the relevant health and related indicators chapter.

A state-owned pharmaceutical company for ARVs

Cabinet has approved a process to find new technology and investor partners in the Ketlaphela project, which aims to establish a government-controlled and fully integrated pharmaceutical company, focusing on the local manufacture of antiretrovirals (ARVs).

Ketlaphela is a joint venture of Pelchem Soc Ltd (Pelchem), the only fluorochemical company in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited (IDC) the foremost development financier in South Africa.

The process will begin with the publishing of a request for information for qualification from potential local and/or international technology and investment partners for Ketlaphela.

Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim awarded the Order of Mapungubwe

MEDIA RELEASE: Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, Associate Scientific Director of CAPRISA (Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa) was bestowed with the Order of Mapungubwe: Bronze by the South African State President on Freedom Day (27 April 2013) in recognition of her “outstanding work in the field of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis research and health policy development.” The Order of Mapungubwe is South Africa’s highest honour.

Fixed-dose combination ARVs: Everything you need to know

Background
In late 2012 the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, announced that fixed-dose combination (FDC) antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) will be used in the first line treatment of HIV-positive patients from 1 April 2013.

This fact sheet explains everything that civil society needs to know about the changeover to fixed-dose combination ARVs – how it impacts on civil society sectors and their constituents.

What is a fixed-dose combination ARV?

Fixed dose combination, or FDC as it will be referred to from this point, is a combination of two or more active drugs in a single pill.
