EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The South African Department of Health, commonly referred to in South Africa as the National Department of Health (NDoH), has prioritised improvements in the health of mothers and children through strategic health programme interventions. To improve the capacity of health districts performing poorly with regard to mother and child health indicators and to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) NDoH has identified and prioritised 18 health sub-districts across South Africa as districts that need interventions for improvement.

New guidelines for counselling and testing children for HIV

A new set of guidelines and training tools dealing with the legal, ethical and counselling issues related to HIV testing of children is now available for HIV/AIDS practitioners working with children.

Dr Heidi van Rooyen, project team leader and research director at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), explains: “These guidelines explore in simple and practical terms the psychosocial implications as well as the legal and policy obligations relating to HIV counselling and testing of children.

“The tools describe what practitioners can do to ensure that HIV testing of children takes place in a way that protects and promotes their rights and is conducted in their best interests."

Health Systems Trust wishes to appoint two Clinical Mentors to support clinical services in two of the districts supported by the South Africa Sustainable Response to HIV and AIDS (SA SURE) project. SA SURE aims to strengthen local capacity to provide sustainable HIV and TB-related care and treatment services. These are one year, fixed-term contract positions, renewable based on funding availability and performance.

Women Out Loud: how women living with HIV will help the world end AIDS

The report includes the voices of some 30 women living with HIV who have given their personal insights into how the epidemic is affecting women and on how women are actively working to reduce the spread and impact of AIDS.
