HIV/AIDS in the People's Republic of China

In South Africa, the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS have long been contested and are, in themselves, complex. Treatment has been normalized, embraced and guided by the National HIV/AIDS and STI Strategic Plan (NSP), which is the overall guiding plan for HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The Plan is implemented in partnership with the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC). The NSP has gaps in the key areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and this has been an important critique of policy guidelines. SRHR are only identified in the indicators of prevention and are absent from other provisions in the Plan. These gaps are also challenges in the Southern African region and globally. While the process of addressing SRHR in South Africa has started, these comments have the potential for wider application globally.

The primary objective of the study was to identify organisations/institutions that provide HIV and AIDS services at the sub-district level, the range of services they provide and their funding sources. This in turn will inform sub-district and district management teams of the progress and impact of services provided and furnish them with tools to monitor the performance and activities on NGOs in their sub-districts and districts. It is hoped that the report will serve as a baseline for ongoing monitoring of the countrys response to the epidemic.

This training manual was developed for the National Department of Health. Compilation of this manual was based on the Department of Healths documents - Data Flow and Data Management Protocol, Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, Technical Notes: Indicators and Definitions, National Antiretroviral Treatment Guidelines and the Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV and AIDS Care, Management and Treatment for South Africa - by a team consisting of members from Health Systems Trust (HST) and the Health Information Systems Programme (HISP).

This study aimed to determine the number of pregnant women who received PMTCT care during antenatal and perinatal care as per the national PMTCT protocol among a group of women delivering at a district hospital in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It also intended to identify the reasons why some pregnant women did not receive this care in the selected district hospital.
