Developing Treatment Guidelines for Women of Reproductive Age

In South Africa, the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS have long been contested and are, in themselves, complex. Treatment has been normalized, embraced and guided by the National HIV/AIDS and STI Strategic Plan (NSP), which is the overall guiding plan for HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The Plan is implemented in partnership with the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC). The NSP has gaps in the key areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and this has been an important critique of policy guidelines. SRHR are only identified in the indicators of prevention and are absent from other provisions in the Plan. These gaps are also challenges in the Southern African region and globally. While the process of addressing SRHR in South Africa has started, these comments have the potential for wider application globally.

The Faces of AIDS project implemented by the Directorate for HIV/AIDS in the Department of Health was part of a national mass media strategy aimed at providing a face for the epidemic. It was expected that endorsement of HIV/AIDS information on prevention, de-stigmatitaion and acceptance of peaople with AIDS (PWA's) by credible role models and PWA's themselves would challenge attitudes people have about AIDS.

Mapping of HIV and AIDS Services and Resources in South Africa

The primary objective of the study was to identify organisations/institutions that provide HIV and AIDS services at the sub-district level, the range of services they provide and their funding sources. This in turn will inform sub-district and district management teams of the progress and impact of services provided and furnish them with tools to monitor the performance and activities on NGOs in their sub-districts and districts. It is hoped that the report will serve as a baseline for ongoing monitoring of the countrys response to the epidemic.
