PURPOSE:

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in Gender Studies, Psychology, Development Studies, Anthropology, Public Health and/or a related field
  • One (1) academic article (accepted or published) in an accredited journal
  • Experience in undertaking research and policy analysis
  • Experience working in any of the following areas; Women’s Rights, Gender Equality, SRHR, Sexuality and/or HIV and AIDS
  • Ability to network with key organisations on any of the above issues.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The South African Department of Health, commonly referred to in South Africa as the National Department of Health (NDoH), has prioritised improvements in the health of mothers and children through strategic health programme interventions. To improve the capacity of health districts performing poorly with regard to mother and child health indicators and to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) NDoH has identified and prioritised 18 health sub-districts across South Africa as districts that need interventions for improvement.

New guidelines for counselling and testing children for HIV

A new set of guidelines and training tools dealing with the legal, ethical and counselling issues related to HIV testing of children is now available for HIV/AIDS practitioners working with children.

Dr Heidi van Rooyen, project team leader and research director at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), explains: “These guidelines explore in simple and practical terms the psychosocial implications as well as the legal and policy obligations relating to HIV counselling and testing of children.

“The tools describe what practitioners can do to ensure that HIV testing of children takes place in a way that protects and promotes their rights and is conducted in their best interests."
