Abstract

Objective:

Accurate and timely information on the causes of child deaths is essential in guiding efforts to improve child survival, by providing data from which health profiles can be constructed and relevant health policies formulated. The purpose of this study was to identify causes of death in children younger than 5 years-old in a tertiary hospital in South Africa.

Methods:

This statistical release presents information on mortality and causes of death in South Africa for deaths that occurred in 2010. It also provides information on death occurrences from 1997 to 2009 to show trends in mortality and causes of death. It is based on data collected through the South African civil registration system that is maintained by the Department of Home Affairs. The information on causes of death provided is as recorded on death notification forms completed by medical practitioners and other certifying officials.

This report provides information by country on the proportion of adult (age 30 years and above) deaths attributable to tobacco by major communicable and non-communicable causes by age and sex. It builds and is consistent with the global estimate provided in WHO’s 2009 report entitled Global health risks: mortality and burden of disease attributable to selected major risks.

Policy analysis can be viewed as a continuum from analysis of policy (how it is determined, what its content is, and monitoring and evaluation of its effect) to analysis for policy (gathering information and advocating a particular policy position). This paper is a policy analysis of current regulatory processes for the control of drug advertising, for the purpose of developing proposals for a new model to be used in South Africa.
