While donor funding for health in low and middle-income countries rose significantly in the last decade, the era of rapid growth has come to an end. Health increased as a share of Official Development Assistance (ODA) during the early part of the past decade, largely spurred on by the creation of several new funding initiatives and mechanisms such as The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). However, this share has remained essentially flat in recent years, with year-to-year increases in donor funding for health peaking in 2007, and declining each year since.

Since the 2009 Lancet Health in South Africa Series, important changes have occurred in the country, resulting in an
increase in life expectancy to 60 years. Historical injustices together with the disastrous health policies of the previous
administration are being transformed. The change in leadership of the Ministry of Health has been key, but new
momentum is inhibited by stasis within the health management bureaucracy. Specific policy and programme changes
are evident for all four of the so-called colliding epidemics: HIV and tuberculosis; chronic illness and mental health;

The research project in KwaZulu-Natal requires a Research Assistant. The person will be based in Westville, KZN

The study sites are MDR-TB Initiation sites in KZN.

The project aims to:

Explore the reasons for the low rates of MDR-TB treatment initiation in public health facilities in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Duties:

Even though it’s preventable and treatable, tuberculosis (TB) is a top ten killer of children worldwide.

ACTION has released its second brief on children and TB, issuing recommendations for the international community and affected countries to combat this neglected epidemic.

Since ACTION released its first Childhood TB brief last year, the global community has paid attention. 

But we need to keep the momentum going. Children are still misdiagnosed, unaccounted for, and lack access to appropriate pediatric TB drugs.

The Data Clerk position is offered as a six-month contract, with the possibility of extension, subject to availability of funding. The position is based in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal.

Explore the reasons for the low rates of MDR-TB treatment initiation in public health facilities in KwaZulu-Natal.

Duties:

This is the seventeenth global report on tuberculosis (TB) published by WHO in a series that started in 1997. It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic and progress in implementing and financing TB prevention, care and control at global, regional and country levels using data reported by 204 countries and territories that account for over 99% of the world’s TB cases.

UNAIDS and the Kaiser Family Foundation have been tracking donor government assistance for AIDS in low- and middle- income countries since 2002. This latest report provides data from governments for 2011, the most recent year with comparable data available across donors. As it shows, international assistance rose sharply from 2002 through 2008, the period just before the onset of the economic crisis. It then began to flatten and, last year, for the first time, disbursements declined. The current report finds that although funding has gone back up, it remains at 2008 levels. If such trends continue, reaching the UN Political Declaration investment target of $22-24 billion needed by 2015 could be at risk.

The report covers the maternal deaths that were reported to the NCCEMD secretariat by 15th April 2011, and that occurred in the triennium 2008-2010. The same definitions used in previous Saving Mothers reports were used in this report.
