1. Input indicators
In 2008/09 the District Health Services Programme (Programme 2) spent R31.4 billion1 on health care according to Treasury's Provincial Budgets and Expenditure Review2. This is up from R18.4 billion in 2005/06 and is estimated to reach R41 billion in 2011/12 the significant growth attributable to the increased spending on primary health care and HIV/AIDS.
District Health Barometer 2007/08
The Health Systems Trust (HST) released its latest edition of the District Health Barometer on the 6th of July at the HISA conference, Emperors Palace, Gauteng. The publication illustrates important aspects of the health system at district level through the analysis of a selected range of health indicators from which comparisons among districts and provinces can be made. Data feeding into the report are drawn from a range of sources including the national Department of Health, Statistics SA, the TB register and the national Treasury. It is the only publication of its kind in South Africa that makes available comparative data for the purpose of measuring and tracking progress in primary health care at the district level.
Reports on Strengthening PHC in 13 Rural Health Districts in South Africa, 2002-2004

The national Department of Health, as part of its contribution to improving the life for all in 13 rural development nodes contracted the HST via an European Union tender, to assist in improving the District Health System and Primary Health Care in these nodes.
Community Empowerment & District Development
The overall goal of the District Support and Community Development cluster is to provide technical support to district health management teams by strengthening the district health and primary health care systems, to facilitate efficient and effective health services that ensure improved health outcomes. The Cluster also champions collaboration between Primary Health Care facilities and community-based health care activities, by increasing knowledge of prevalent health conditions.
