Through the Reducing Maternal and Child Mortality through Strengthening Primary Health Care (RMCH) project, Health Systems Trust wishes to support the National Department of Health (NDoH) in country-wide coordination of the District Clinical Specialist Team (DCST) stream of Primary Health Care (PHC). The incumbent will work with provinces to guide, oversee implement, monitor and report to the NDOH on progress, and to compile updates and presentations for the National Health Council (NHC).

The post is a contract position linked to the duration of the project. The incumbent will work from the NDoH offices in Pretoria.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

THE Medical Research Council (MRC) has signed the global AllTrials campaign to get pharmaceutical manufacturers and scientists to publish all their research on medicines, and not just the studies with favourable results.

The AllTrials campaign was launched in the UK in January by a group including the British Medical Journal, author Ben Goldacre, and the Cochrane Collaboration, to raise public awareness about the problem of unreported clinical trial data.

The publication bias distorts the information scrutinised by regulators when they approve new medicines, influences the decisions made by governments and medical schemes when they weigh up which treatments to pay for, and leaves doctors prescribing drugs with side-effects they are unaware of.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

THE government wants to use the newly launched Academy for Leadership and Management in Healthcare to set benchmarks, norms and standards for the leadership and management of hospitals in South Africa.

The Department of Health kicked off an orientation week for the academy in Johannesburg on Monday.

Hospitals in South Africa face severe challenges such as staff constraints and fraud. The Eastern Cape health department lost R1.4bn to fraud over the past three years, according to an audit report on the province’s hospitals, which was released at the weekend.

The news that the United States President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) was discontinuing its financial support to non-governmental organisations in South Africa was received with shock by the thousands of patients at Hope for Life, an NGO in Winterveld in the northern region of the City of Tshwane that is now facing closure.

Hope for Life provides various HIV-related services, including antiretroviral treatment and home-based care to the Winterveld community.
