Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major health problem in South Africa. They not only present a huge disease burden on society but also facilitate the spread of HIV. The care and management of patients with STIs has been identified as a key area to enhance HIV prevention efforts in our country. To assess the quality of care of sexually transmitted diseases a tool known as DISCA (District STD Quality of Care Assessment) was developed after consultation with nurses, public health professionals, and health services managers. The tool is a short questionnaire that looks at the key input, process and output indicators related to STD care.
