South Africa currently only provides for medical abortion in the private sector – however, the National Department of Health is finalising guidelines for implementation in the public sector. Given the demand for abortion services by women, the limited accessibility of surgical abortion there is a need to make medical abortion services available. This should address illegalmedical abortion providers currently advertising on lamppostsin public areas and the concerning maternal mortality rates.

Equinet - The Network on Equity in Health in Southern Africa

Equinet is a network of research, civil society and health sector organisations. Equinet seeks to develop and widen the conceptual understanding of equity in health, Equinet identifies critical areas of work and policy issues and makes visible existing unfair and avoidable inequalities in health. Equinet's main aim is to build alliances leading to positive policies on health both the local and regional levels. This is achieved by disseminating information and stimulating an informed debate on equity in health in southern Africa.

Health InterNetwork (HIN)

The Health InterNetwork project was introduced by United Nations' Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the UN Millennium Summit in the year 2000. Led by WHO, the Health InterNetwork aims to strengthen public health services by providing public health workers, researchers and policy makers access to high-quality, relevant and timely health information through an Internet portal. It further aims to improve communication and networking. As key components, the project will provide training as well as information and communication technology applications for public health.

The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA)

COHSASA is an independent, non-partisan ngo that assists healthcare facilities to provide quality healthcare to all Southern African citizens by a process of empowerment, team-building and continuous quality improvement that is motivated by the goal of accreditation. Our vision is to enable all Southern Africans to receive equitable and quality healthcare and to empower South African healthcare facilities to deliver quality, cost-effective and compassionate care through an integrated quality improvement and accreditation approach.

Declaration of Helsinki (World Medical Association)

As an organisation promoting the highest possible standards of medical ethics, the WMA provides ethical guidance to physicians through its Declarations and Statements. These also help to guide National Medical Associations, governments and international organizations throughout the world. The Declarations and Statements cover a wide range of subjects, including an international code of medical ethics, the rights of patients, research on human subjects, care of the sick and wounded in time of armed conflict, torture of prisoners, the use and abuse of drugs, family planning and pollution.

Medical Technology and Practice Patterns Institute

Medical Technology & Practice Patterns Institute (MTPPI) is a nonprofit organization established in 1986 to conduct research on the clinical, economic, and social implications of new and emerging health care technologies. MTPPI's research is directed toward the formulation and implementation of local and national health care policies. In addition, MTPPI has been designated by the World Health Organization as a WHO Collaborating Center for Health Technology Assessment and in that role contributes to international health care research.
