SA in danger of losing AIDS battle

South Africa's HIV and AIDS strategy has come in for a stinging attack, with the government blamed for continuing stigma and infection and death rates that are still outstripping treatment. In what harked back to the severe criticism last year from the UN special envoy on AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, Unicef's South Africa representative has now warned that the country is in danger of losing the battle against HIV/AIDS.

To this end, the Consortium brings together organizations and individuals in a network that processes information and works towards an equitable response to the pandemic. The AC is one of the largest functioning HIV AIDS affiliate-based networks in South Africa. We have in excess of 1000 affiliate members (AIDS Service Organizations and individuals) who work in the field of HIV/ AIDS. We provide numerous services to our affiliates training, resource centre, information dissemination, cyber caf, community forums and networks, material distribution, mentoring, as well as engaging in Advocacy and other key initiatives.

When it comes to sub-Saharan Africa's devastating AIDS crisis, there is an understandable tendency to latch onto any scrap of good news. Figures suggesting the epidemic is waning in some countries are being trumpeted by governments and international donor agencies as evidence that their prevention efforts are succeeding.
