The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) is committed to working with local, regional and international partners to fight human rights abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity worldwide. In mid-2007, IGLHRC opened a regional office for Africa in Cape Town, South Africa, to more effectively manage its operations on the continent and to build partnerships with African LGBT and human rights organizations. The Africa Program Coordinator will manage this office and IGLHRC's Africa program.

Focus directed on human rights in health care

Human rights in health care is not just an apartheid-era issue, but one that still challenges health professionals in South Africa today, the director of the Steve Biko Foundation, Nkosinathi Biko, said on Wednesday.

Right to Health Campaign in South Africa

The People's Health Movement, a global network of civil society groups, researchers, activists and teachers involved in health, proposes the launch of a global campaign on the Right to Health. PHM would like to invite civil society organizations, interested individuals and groups to participate in discussing the possibility of hosting such a campaign in South Africa. It would also contribute to building civil society for the Third People's Health Assembly, planned for 2010 at an African venue (to be determined). This edition of Critical Health Perspectives sketches the background to the campaign and some of the thinking behind it.

International Day of Disabled persons

The UN announced this year's theme for December 3rd, the International Day of Disabled Persons is Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Action in Development. The goal is to highlight the interdependence between the rights of people with disabilities and the development process, with the knowledge that full societal inclusion of people with disabilities and the enjoyment of our fundamental rights and freedoms on an equal footing with all other members of our society are essential to the achievement of development goals.

4th International Human Rights Academy

The Human Rights Centre of Ghent University (Belgium), the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) at Utrecht University (The Netherlands), the Faculty of Law of University of the Western Cape (South Africa) and the International Federation of Health and Human Rights Organisations (IFHHRO) have pleasure in announcing the 4th International Human Rights Academy which will take place in Cape Town South Africa.
