DESCRIPTION: This project assesses the performance of district hospitals in South Africa in key areas of hospital management using seven hospital performance indicators. Individual facility data is compared to national and provincial indicator average values over a period of three financial years: 2008/2009; 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. The second phase of the project entails detailed analysis of district hospital data; comparison of hospitals, districts, provinces; review of targets and norms and qualitative investigation of selected hospitals, districts and provinces.
OBJECTIVES:
  • To assess the performance of all district hospitals using seven key hospital performance indicators
  • To reviewselected hospital performance indicator targets and norms
  • To encourage the utilisation of routine data for quality improvement at facility level
