ISDS Site: Ukhahlamba District Municipality (Archived)

The Ukhahlamba District is bordered by Lesotho, the Free State, the Northern Cape , and the southern areas of the Eastern Cape and accommodates some 371 170 people (Mid-2002 estimates, Census 1996 statistics).

The district is divided into 3 health sub-districts namely Elundini, Senqu and Maletswai-Gariep. The Elundini local municipality consists of three deep rural areas namely Mount Fletcher, Tsolo and Qumbu. The rest of the sub-district is mainly farming area with two urban service areas, Maclear and Ugie.

Senqu local municipality has a largely rural component around the small urban service centre of Sterkspruit and two smaller towns Barkley East and Lady Grey which are surrounded by farms.

Maletswai-Gariep sub-district has two local municipalities namely Maletswai and Gariep. Aliwal North is the main commercial and tourism centre in the sub-district and there are several smaller urban centres including Steynsburg, Venterstad, Burgersdorp and Jamestown.

Ukhahlamba District is one of 13 disadvantaged rural nodes, which are earmarked by the Presidents&rsquo office to be part of the Integrated Sustainable Rural Development Program. (ISRDP) ISDS facilitates health systems development in partnership with the district management team in:

  • health management (including support systems like information, drugs, transport)
  • quality of care in priority programmes (TB, HIV/AIDS, STI, Maternal and child health)
  • integration of planning into the IDP.
