Project: Health Information System For Data Capturers (HISDC)

STATUS: Current (August 2008 to September 2011) , extended for a further year to Sept 2012
FUNDER/S: South African Department of Health
PARTNER/S: Continuing Education at the University of Pretoria (lead partner), Health Systems Trust and Health Information Systems Programme
AREA: South Africa: all nine provinces
DESCRIPTION:

The project aims to train 3 535 matriculants over the three year period as Data Capturers in health management information systems, for deployment in public health facilities. The Department of Health, as part of an innovative sub-programme of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), initiated the recruitment, training and employment of the matriculants throughout the country. The programme was aimed at improving data collection, capturing and processing through supporting processes at the level at which the data is collected, i.e. facility level.

Due to funding constraints the project was halted in early 2011, but resumed again in 2012. The Collaboration is also in the process of defining a “Handover Strategy” for the continuation of the training through provincial regional training centres. The following five modules are delivered during the intensive training period:

  • Basic Computer Literacy
  • Health Information Systems
  • Data Management
  • District Health Information System
  • Electronic TB Register

At the end of each 21-day training period CEatUP awards successful learners a Basic Routine Health Information Systems Certificate. The intention is that, following the training, learners would be employed by provinces at facility level for a one-year internship period. By the end of December 2011 approximately 2 774

Data Capturers were trained by the Collaboration in preparation for their internship period
