1. The Technical Assistance Support Contract Tuberculosis (TASC 2 TB) Project

Researchers: Team leader, Elizabeth Lutge supported by Madibata Matji, Patela Giyose and Marian Loveday.
Description: This project provides support elements to a large scale TB improvement programme being implemented in four provinces by URC with HST as a sub-contractor. HST’s responsibility includes monitoring and evaluating, implementation of TB health systems support project in the Eastern Cape and some operational research.
Duration: August 2004 to September 2008.

2. Leakages in the TB Programme

Principal Investigator: Marian Loveday, supervised by Elizabeth Lutge
Description: This quantitative and qualitative study seeks to understand the reasons why so many of the patients who present to facilities with TB symptoms are lost within the system. It is planned as the first phase of an intervention to improve case-holding of patients with TB.
Duration: April 2005 – March 2007.

3. The Social Determinants of Health: The Role of Incentives in Improving TB Outcomes

Description: This intervention study is planned to investigate the effects of incentives such as food vouchers in improving the nutritional status of patients newly diagnosed with TB, and their TB outcomes.
