4th Conference of the International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture and Society (IAS

2003-06-22 to 2003-06-25

This conference will be hosted by the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WISER), the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa (GALA), and The Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. There is a limited amount of work done in the field of sexuality research in an African context. The conference aims to give new impetus to this avenue of enquiry. Attitudes to homosexuality, silence surrounding domestic violence and the whisperings and coded references that accompany HIV/AIDS-related deaths are suggestive of broader cultural norms that could be usefully understood in relation to 'secrecy'. The IASSCS is now accepting abstracts for the conference. The deadline for submission of abstracts is on 31 January 2003.
