2008-02-11 to 2008-02-15This one-week short course aims to empower participants with a vision and tools to develop comprehensive and integrated approaches to HIV/AIDS at district and sub-district levels. It is a new short course developed jointly by Wits School of Public Health and Mdecins Sans Frontires (Doctors Without Borders). It draws largely on several recent experiences of managing comprehensive AIDS programs in both peri-urban and rural settings in southern Africa.
Wits School of Public Health, Johannesburg The content of the short course covers the following themes: an overview of individual clinical needs based on HIV-disease progression methodologies to assess the burden of HIV-related illness at a population level and to define coverage objectives definition of components for the full continuum of HIV/AIDS services tools to analyse existing capacity and systemic constraints and strategies to overcome them. Participants will examine both the demand and supply side challenges to increasing coverage and prolonging life. Case studies will be presented from existing HIV/AIDS programs in the region that illustrate health system interventions such as decentralization, task-shifting, patient-centred approaches to care (including TB/HIV integration) and community support. Tools to monitor and evaluate as well as strategies to support sustainability will also be examined. Both successes and unresolved challenges will be discussed. Accreditation: Participants will receive either a Wits certificate of attendance or if they complete a course assignment and write an examination, a certificate of competence.
