18^th WITS SKILLS TRAINING COURSE

The next Wits Clinical Skills Course will be held on Friday 16^th October 2009.

Participants have the chance to do 5 skills stations of 80 minutes each during the day. As always, the focus will be on practical skills relevant to rural hospital and primary care practice.

Details of the course are as follows:

Date: Friday 16^th October 2009

Time: 7H45 to 17H15.

Venue: Clinical Skills Unit, Centre for Health Sciences Education, 3^rd floor, Wits Medical School, Parktown

Who will benefit: Community service doctors, rural doctors and general practitioners wishing to improve their clinical skills postgraduate family medicine students.

Cost: R750 per participant (includes refreshments, lunch, handouts and certificate). Concession for current Wits postgraduate students: R500

CPD points: 7 points will be awarded for full participation

Skills to be covered: Topics for this course may include endotracheal intubation, CPR, mental health assessment, obstetric emergencies, rapid systems examination, respiratory problems, approach to x-rays, ECGs, etc. (All topics are subject to confirmation a final list will be available in late September.)

Note:

• The numbers are limited to 36 participants, on a first come, first served basis. Preference will be given to doctors practicing in South Africa and to family medicine postgraduate students. The closing date for bookings is 4^th October 2009.
• Participants will be able to choose 5 practical skills sessions, out of a possible 12. Lists for choices will be sent to registered participants after 4^th October. Sessions will be allocated according to preferred choices, based on responses to the list sent out it is thus important you provide an email address or fax number on registration. We cannot guarantee you will get your first preferences, but do ensure you will get sessions within the list of the top 9 submitted. Early responders usually get their top 5 preferences.
• Note that the focus is clinical practice in the South African health district context. This is not a preparation course for any exams candidates preparing for the HPCSA exam are advised that this course is not intended to assist them with that.

• Payment must be made in cash at the office, unless otherwise arranged. Registration and payment are required to secure a place. Payment includes a 50% non-refundable deposit. Invoices can be provided for doctors who require this.
