Board of Trustees
An independent Board of Trustees guides and provides oversight of the HST. Board members collectively comprise a diverse group of individuals with professional standing and expertise in health systems development in and beyond South Africa.

Ms. Jeanette Hunter - Chairperson The Board is led by the chairperson, Ms Jeanette Hunter, who is the Chief Information Officer for Gauteng Department of Health and previously Director - Knowledge Management in the North West Province Department of Health. She brings to the Board wide experience in policy analysis and implementation, planning, monitoring and evaluation, and Health Information Systems Implementation and Maintenance. |

Ms. Seadimo Chaba- Deputy Chairperson is Human Resources Executive in charge of the human capital portfolio for Sasol and she also serves on the Executive of the Black Management Forum as well as Company Secretary. She was previously the Chief Executive Officer of Snyman & Vennote (Pty) Ltd, Executive Manager for Public Works and Management Services, Gauteng Province, having previously served as Chief Director for HR in the office or the Premier. She has a degree in Economics and Industrial Psychology and diplomas in Human Resources and Diagnostic Radiography. She brings to the Board her experience in management and human resources in both public and private sectors. She has also received a number of awards as a leader such as being the first woman to be “Boss of the Year” in 2002.

Mr. Kevin Bellis
holds a B Sc Joint Honours Geography and Sociology and is currently a Technical Manager on the DFID Multi-sectoral HIV and AIDS programme in South Africa. He brings to the Board his vast experience in project management, Management and Institutional Development, Operational and Strategic Planning, Financial Planning, Health Systems, Tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS, Operational Research and Monitoring and Evaluation. He has vast international experience as manager, technical advisor and consultant. He is a UK citizen. |

Dr. Michael Hendricks
is the former Provincial Director General of the Northern Cape Provincial Administration as well as the former Head of Department of the Northern Cape Department of Health. He holds a M Sc (Med) in Community and Child Health, a post-graduate diploma in health management as well as certificated in economics and finance. He brings to the Board his experience and skills in management, leadership, financial management and knowledge of the national health system. |

Prof. Kaya Mfenyana
holds a PhD in Community Higher Education Service Partnership, A Masters in Educational Administration as well as a Masters in Family Medicine. He is currently the first Professor and Head of Department of Family Medicine at the Walter Sisulu University. He brings academic experiences as well as management and leader skills to the Board. |

Prof. Laetitia Rispel
is currently an Adjunct professor and senior researcher at the Centre for Health Policy (CHP), School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand. She has studied at universities in South Africa, the Unites States and the United Kingdom, and holds a Doctorate in Health Systems from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before joining CHP, she was the Executive Director of the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health Research Programme at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa. From 2001-2006, she was the Head of the Health Department in Gauteng Province. She serves on the boards of the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) and is a member of the research sector of the South African National Council on AIDS (SANAC). Laetitia was the 2003 health category winner of the South African Shoprite/Checkers/SABC2 woman of the year award, in recognition of her health leadership and activism. In 2007, she was listed as one of the top 25 most influential leaders in the health care industry by the South African Institute of Health Care Management. She was the recently elected President of the Public Health Association of South Africa: 2008-2010. She brings to the Board her expertise in Research, Public Health, Monitoring and Evaluation, Social determinants of health and gender and management.

Prof. David Serwadda
Director Institute of Public Health, Makerere University in Uganda; and is also an Associate Professor at that university. David’s expertise is in the fields of epidemiology, evaluation of health intervention and disease surveillance, and his specialty is infectious disease. International Epidemiological Association, among others. |

Mr. Sagie Pillay
Chief Executive Officer of Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He has worked for the National Health Department of Health Programme on Hospital Management and Decentralisation. Has a Masters in Health Management, policy and planning from Leeds University UK, and has undertaken a Senior Executive programme from Harvard Business School. He has extensive consulting experience in several African countries as well as in hospital management, policy and planning.

Prof. Welile Shasha
is currently a research consultant and has been the team leader for evaluating the HIV and AIDS programme in South Africa. He is the former CEO of the Ilimalethu Development Association as well as the Head of the WHO Office in South Africa from 1996 to 2005. He holds a Master degree of Medicine, Community Health and established the Department of Community Medicine at the then University of Transkei, where he was Professor and Head of the Department. He brings to the Board his experience in community health, research as well as in-depth knowledge of the national health system and international experience. |

Prof. John Volmink
is currently Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Cornerstone Christian College, having started his academic career at the University of Western Cape, and completed his PhD in Mathematics Education at Cornell University, NY, in 1988. He has held various teaching positions, including at the University of Western Cape, University of Cape Town and Cornell University. As Director for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education in Durban he has been involved in development initiatives. He also served as Interim Pro-Vice Chancellor: Partnership at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He has been centrally involved in curriculum reform in postapartheid South Africa and was asked to play a leading role in the transformation of education in the new South Africa. He is Chairperson of the International Partnership Network (IPN). |

Dr. Tim Wilson
retired from his position as Cluster Manager: PHC, Districts and Development in the National Department of Health in 2006 and has since been a senior research associate for the CIET Africa, a non-governmental organisation that does community based research related to the delivery of public services. He holds a Masters in Community Health and Epidemiology. From 1994 to 1995 he was the special advisor to the Minister of Health. He brings to the Board skills and experience on the National Health System, PHC and Hospital services as well as expertise in management and leadership. |

Dr. Sibongile Zungu
is a qualified medical doctor with a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management and she is currently enrolled for a MBA. She is currently the acting Head of Department, Mpumalanga Department of Health and Social Services where she was previously the Deputy Director General of the Health branch in the province. She received several awards of which one was for the Top 20 Influential Leaders in the South African Health Sector in 2007. She brings to the Board extensive experience in management and leadership and indepth knowledge of the national health system. |
