ISDS Site: Greater Sekhukhune District MunicipalityThe Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality is one of five districts in Limpopo province. It is a cross-boundary district between the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. The district has five local municipal areas. These are: Fetakgomo (NPO3A3) and Makhudu Thamaga (NPO3A2) both situated within the boundaries of Limpopo and Greater Grobblersdal (CBLC4), Greater Marble Hall (CBLC3) and Greater Tubatse (CBLC5) which are cross-boundary municipalities between Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The district is rural in nature and covers an area of about 13 235 square km with a population of about 1 055 881 people and an average population density of 87 people per square km. It is one of the poorest districts in the country, characterised by poor infrastructure and lack of safe water supply. Some 33% of the population still depend on natural water supply and 7% have no formal means of sanitation. There is a high rate of unemployment (61.6%). A small proportion of health facilities still do not have access to telephones nor electricity and water. Some of the health problems that affect the district are malnutrition, diarrhoea, HIV/AIDS, STIs and TB. The ISDS is currently supporting the district management teams on improving quality of care in the management of malnutrition, EPI, IMCI, HIV/AIDS, STIs, TB, Health Information Systems and clinic supervision which are the districts&rsquo main priorities.
