Research: Mother and Child Health Research

1. The Goodstart Intervention & related Maternal and Child Health Care Projects

Funders:  EU and CDC through PEPFAR and managed by MRC

Principal investigator: Tanya Doherty

Description: A randomised control trial undertaken in partnership with the MRC and University of Western Cape seeking to investigate the effectiveness of peer-educators in improving infant feeding practice and health outcomes as well as access to social grants in three sites, Paarl, Rietvlei and Umlazi (Goodstart II).

Duration: October 2005 to ~ September 2007; continuing with new studies

2. Evaluation of the Mothers’ Programme (m2m) in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

Funder: The Population Council’s Horizon’s Programme

Principal investigator: Sibongile Mkhize, supervised by Jaine Roberts; data analysis and reporting supported by Irwin Friedman.

Description: A before and after quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the effectiveness of HIV positive mothers as peer educators during ante natal and post natal care at three sites in the Pietermaritzburg area.

Duration: July 2005 to June 2007
