2. Baseline Audit of Resources Available For Information Management at A National and Provincial Level

Description: This rapid operational research study seeks to understand the constraints that exist in the information management system from the human as well as information technology perspective. It aims to inform improvements needed in the system.

4. Occupational Disease Burden on the Public Health System – the Functioning of Surveillance Systems under the DoH’s Medical Bureau for Occupational Disease (MBOD) and Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act (ODMWA)

Description: This study will research health systems issues in relation to the activities of the MBOD and the new Occupational Health Directorate. It will focus on a range of occupationally acquired pneumoconioses, and the responsibility, under the ODMWA, of the DoH to provide medical surveillance, certification and compensation services.

7. Health Care Waste Management in Public Clinics in the Ilembe District: Situational Analysis and Intervention Strategy

Principal investigator: Sibusiso Gabela a student undertaking a Masters in Public Health with the University of KwaZulu Natal under the supervision of Dr Steven Knight. It has been undertaken as a means to support capacity development in the Public sector.
Description: This study investigated current Health Care Waste (HCW) handling practises in the public clinics in the iLembe District to determine the HCW components and volumes generated by the public clinics. It sought to find out whether public clinics have the HCW management policy in place and that they are implementing it correctly.
Duration: The study has been completed.
