1. Strengthening Provincial Research Committees (Including an Audit of Provincial Research Committees)

Principal investigator: Thokozani Mbatha, supervised by Elizabeth Lutge
Funder: National Department of Heath: Research Directorate.
Description: The project investigates progress in the establishment of Provincial Research Committees required in terms of the National Health Act (2003) and Health Policy Research Guidelines issued in 2001.
Duration: July 2006 to June 2007

2. Evaluation of the Learning Complexes Project of the Centre for Rural Health

Funder: Atlantic Philanthropies though the Centre for Rural Health
Principal investigator: Elizabeth Lutge assisted by Sibongile Mkhize and Irwin Friedman
Description: The Centre for Rural Health (CRH) of the University of KwaZulu-Natal has embarked on a three year project, funded by Atlantic Philanthropies, to establish a Learning Complex of health institutions in three districts of northern KwaZulu-Natal, The Research Programme is responsible for the evaluation of the Learning Complexes project over a three year period.
Duration: January 2006 to December 2008

3. Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study Investigating the Career Choices of School Leavers In Relation To Nursing, And What Influences These Choices

Funder: National Department of Health: Research Directorate.
Principal investigator: Sibongile Mkhize
Description: The study investigates the perceptions of school leavers around nursing as a career choice among school leavers, and the factors that influence these choices.
Duration: February 2007 to July 2007

4. Baseline Study on Opportunities for Expansion of the Expanded Public Works Programme Social Sector. Countrywide Institutional Audit and Capacity Analysis in Regards to Overcoming Obstacles in Mainstreaming the EPWP

Funder: Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA)
Principal investigators: Irwin Friedman and Nandy Mothibe assisted by consultants Lungile Bhengu, Alfred Mafuleka and Norman Reynolds
Description: The study undertook an audit of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities in the Social Sector Cluster (Health, Education and Welfare) countrywide and also undertook a cost-benefit analysis of how to extend the programme into new job creation categories.
Duration: July 2006 to July 2007

5. Community Health Workers – Moving Towards Best Practice: Documenting and Learning from Existing CHW Programmes

Funder: National Department of Health: Research Directorate.

Description: This study is a qualitative descriptive study of best practice activities in fifty community health worker projects carried out in all nine provinces

6. Investigating an approach to developing a surveillance system for measuring the impact of CHW Programmes and the implications for Social Spending

Funder: National Department of Health: Research Directorate.
Principal investigator: Marina Clarke, assisted by Hennie Schoeman, Irwin Friedman, Fiona Macdonald, Maureen Aucamp
Description: This work focuses on undertaking research into the mechanism for establishing a surveillance system for measuring the impact of CHW programmes and will be implemented by Dr Marina Clarke.  Based on developing such a mechanism initially at a few sites, the approach would be to generalize the experience into a surveillance programme that can be implemented more widely. The use of mobile phone technology will be compared with paper-based systems in an attempt to develop a set of indicators that will be proposed for nation-wide adoption.

7. Baseline Assessment of Youth Mentoring Programme

Funder: Medical Sciences for Health: USAID
Principal investigator: Overall project supervision by Irwin Friedman assisted by Nandy Mothibe and external consultants Hlanhla Ngomane, Refiloe Joka, Ntombi Thula, Thadeka Ntuli and Tshitshi Ngubo
Description: The aim of this research is to provide a baseline of provision of reproductive services to young people in 41 facilities in eight districts of five provinces, (Kwazulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West Province)
