There is a significant increase in reported deaths in some provinces when compared with 1999. It is not known whether this is just due to improved reporting or due to an actual increase in maternal deaths. There remains concern that in the EC and LP that there is still significant under-reporting since the maternal deaths per 100 000 female population are much lower when compared to MP and KZN. All 4 provinces are similar and have similar problems, hence one would expect similar rates of maternal deaths.
