Government Looking At Alcohol Abuse
PulseTrack
2000-03-10

The Department of Health is studying the possibility of restricting alcohol advertising and enforcing warning labels on bottles. New laws might be introduced, but only in 2001/2002.

Prof Melvyn Freeman, the department's director for mental health and substance abuse, told Parliament's Health Portfolio Committee that the department was studying the possibility of restricting alcohol advertising and enforcing warning labels on bottles. New laws might be introduced, but only in 2001/2002.

The issues involved in alcohol were not identical as those involving tobacco products, but the department hoped to learn lessons from the new tobacco regulations, which were expected to come into force in the next six weeks.

"What we want to do is try to reduce abuse of alcohol rather than use," he said. "We are serious about it." The public was not getting a balanced view on alcohol from manufacturers and advertising companies.
