Keeping email flowing in the Eastern Cape

HealthLink helps to keep the lines of communication open in the Eastern Cape.

HealthLink, a project of the Health Systems Trust, has been supporting several of the provincial departments of health to provide basic electronic communication facilities in their most rural and disadvantaged health facilities for some years. In the Eastern Cape there have been four regional nodes or servers, providing dial-up access for email to a range of public health facilities. This service has attempted to keep remote health workers connected to communications networks, while the government is working on getting network infrastructure out to the periphery. Recently the server in Umtata was giving some trouble, and needed to be reconfigured. HealthLink has taken this opportunity (in consultation with the provincial health informatics department) to reconfigure this server to use more current mail server software that is more widely supported and which should eliminate some of the problems of the older protocols in handling attachments. (The Marimba / FIDO email system has many advantages for poorly resourced areas, but also presents a number of technical difficulties). The new server runs on a current version of the free, open-source operating system, Linux. Some of the other mail servers may also be upgraded in this manner.
