No transport, no primary health care
Wendy Hall 2000-06-23
This new publication looks at how transport systems can be optimally used in health districts.
Adequate transport is one of the prerequisites of a well-functioning
district. Since transport systems in most districts are less than what they
need, it is important that disrticts use what resources they have optimally.
This publication looks at the transport system in Mt Frere, a district in the
Eastern Cape. Specifically, the study aimed to:
Determine the purpose of each trip made by the district pool of vehicles
for the period March to May 1999.
Rationalise and improve the use of vehicles in the district.
Assess the degree to which demands from the regional and provincial
offices are made on district transport, especially for functions that are
not directly related to patient care.
Assess the effect of delayed authorisation for repairs to vehicles on
service delivery.
The methods and results of this study will be useful to health managers, and
anyone interested in ensuring the efficient functioning of a health district.
