Medical package to be reviewed
The Citizen
2000-07-28

The Council for Medical Schemes has started a consultative process to review the Prescribed Minimum Benefits package, which the law requires medical schemes to provide to their members.

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has started a consultative process to review the Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) package, which the law requires medical schemes to provide to their members.

At the first workshop in Johannesburg, about 20 stakeholder groups had a lively discussion on the impact of the PMB packages and problems in implementing and interpreting minimum benefits to members. Some of the concerns involved the availability of public hospital services and waiting lists, problems with billing and fee structures in public hospitals as well as additional financial risks  and administration problems, which the (PMB) causes medical schemes

Patrick Masobe, CMS chief executive officer, said PMBs were in line with government policy to extend private healthcare delivery to a greater number of South Africans. We are keen to learn about problems being experienced so that the council can chart the way forward and make informed recommendations to the Minister of Health for an effective review of the PMB package. The review itself remains the prerogative of the Minister. Encouraged by the open discussion and interest of participants, Masobe said it bode well for the rest of the consultation process.
