A Distance Learning Programme for District Health Professionals in Southern Africa Child Health Unit, University of Cape Town; Feb. 2001 - Nov. 2002
The M.Phil. in Maternal and Child Health (MCH) is a masters programme that
aims to improve district MCH services by developing the capacity of health
professionals to plan, manage, deliver, and evaluate these services. The
programme combines face-to-face delivery with computer-based distance learning.
Learners are required to complete eight modules of coursework and a 20 000- word
dissertation. The coursework includes regular submissions to a personal tutor,
email discussions, and module and consolidation assignments.
Programme modules are as follows:
1.
MCH Foundation Module: Critically examines priority maternal and child health
issues, the major determinants of health, and the role of health services in
promoting and sustaining health.
2.
Psycho-social context of MCH: Analyses the psycho-social context of maternal and
child health in southern Africa
3.
Health and Development: Explores the developmental determinants of health and
the systems and ideologies that promote and sustain MCH.
4.
Epidemiology and Research Methods: Introduces the principles of epidemiological
research for district health management.
5.
Organisation and Management: Examines the organisation, planning, and management
of district health services, and the nature and role of policy, law, and
advocacy in health service delivery.
6.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Provides a practical
introduction to the use of ICT and the Internet for communication, learning and
research.
7.
MCH Integrated Module: Integrates the principles of the foundation modules into
a public health approach to a number of priority maternal and child health
issues.
8.
Professional Communication: Communication skills for district health management
and service delivery are developed throughout the programme.
Admission
requirements
-
an undergraduate degree in the health sciences

at least two years' experience in maternal and child health services
Preference
will be given to health professionals who are pursuing a career in district
health management.
