South Africa's Ministry of Health has been chosen as one of the winners of new international awards for tobacco control heroes. The awards, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will be presented next week as part of the 11th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health, in Chicago.

The Luther L Terry awards are named after the author of the famous 1964 US surgeon general's report, which linked tobacco to lung cancer and other illnesses. The ministry will receive its award in the category for outstanding leadership by a government ministry.

Director of the National Council Against Smoking, Dr Yussuf Saloojee, who was on the committee that decided the winners, said the award was recognition of a decade of work by a trio of health ministers - incumbent Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, her predecessor Dr Nkosazana Zuma and Dr Rina Venter. South Africa now has some of the toughest tobacco control legislation. Saloojee said the award was also recognition of the fact that since the African National Congress came into government, tobacco consumption on South Africa had dropped by 35 percent. South Africans could be proud of the ministry's achievements, he said.
