The cholera outbreak in northern KwaZulu-Natal had claimed 17 lives by Wednesday (27/9), SABC television news reported.

Health officials visited the affected areas earlier in the day to warn residents about the dangers of the disease, and educate them on water purification methods.  For some, however, rivers infected with the bacteria remained their only source of water and they had not other alternative.

More than 1 000 people have been treated for the disease since it was first identified in rural communities outside Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The disease was first recorded outside Empangeni in August and was traced to the Mhlatuze River. On Monday, the health department said the outbreak had been spreading and cases were recorded in Eshowe on Friday. Water points were being set up and the SA National Defence Force was on standby to bring water tanks into the areas that were infected.

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who visited Ngwelezana where 291 patients have been treated since the outbreak in August, said she was impressed with the work being done to stem cholera.
