by SAPA 2001-08-31
The district health system (DHS) is the cornerstone for health service delivery in South Africa, Free State health MEC Ouma Tsopo said on Friday. Tsopo was speaking at the opening of a conference on district health services in Bloemfontein. The objectives of the conference were to market the DHS and to ensure all the stakeholders supported it. Several bodies including the Provincial Health Authority and District Health Authorities would also be inaugurated during the conference, Tsopo said.
She said at a recent meeting between the Minister of Health and health MECs it was decided that district health services would be provided in every district and metropolitan council. It would include comprehensive primary healthcare services. The provincial government would run the district health services.
Tsopo said one of the major health challenges facing district health services was HIV/AIDS. Tsopo said it was important that the district health systems be implemented without delay to bring sufficient health services to all South Africans. The conference ended on Sunday. Among those that attended were Health Minister Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, MECs and municipal councillors from the Free State and other provinces. (Source: SAPA, 24 August 2001)
