Green light for report on what's killing SA

The long-awaited report on the major cause of death in South Africa between 1997 and 2001 is finally to be released. The cabinet decided yesterday to release the report today after it was briefed by the task team that included Statistics South Africa, the Medical Research Council (MRC), and the departments of Health, Home Affairs and Social Development at its regular meeting. The cabinet said the report was commissioned to identify challenges with regard to the impact of road accidents, violence, HIV/AIDS, TB and other causes of death. The briefing covered the findings, their implications and further research requirements. The report's release to the public was delayed so that the cabinet could see it first. The MRC released its own report last year which showed that 40% of deaths of those aged between 15 and 49 in 2000 were due to AIDS. But Stats SA later repudiated the finding and trashed the report.
