WITS Institute For Social And Economic Research (WISER)is an interdisciplinary research institute, created to do cutting-edge research, and promote local and international debate, on the complexities of change in South Africa, understood from comparative and global perspectives. Its research agenda has been structured around five flagship research programmes: Law, Criminality and the Moral Logics of Everyday Life; Meanings of Money; Rethinking Race; Cultures of Sexuality and Power; the Limits of the State. Applicants for the available research position will be required to situate their research in one or more of these research programmes. We are particularly keen to appoint someone whose expertise and research interests fit well within the programme on Law, Criminality and the Moral Logics of Everyday Life. The appointment will be a two-year contract, beginning 1 February 2004 or thereafter. Interested applicants should have an excellent undergraduate and graduate record, with at least a Masters degree in one of the following disciplines: sociology, history, economics, political science, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, literary studies, cultural studies, art, drama, law, public health, geography. Requirements: For all positions, the ability to work in a team is essential.

Senior Research Officers: PhD (or its equivalent), substantial research experience, good publication record, the capacity to supervise doctoral students.

Research Officers: Masters degree or PhD (or their equivalents), some research experience and publications

Junior Research Officers: Normally a Masters degree (or equivalent).

Salary and Benefits: Salaries are negotiable according to qualifications and experience. Benefits include annual bonus, medical aid, pension/provident fund contribution, housing subsidy (where appropriate), generous leave provisions and bursaries for dependants.
