PRESS RELEASE: NEW CEO FOR LEADING HEALTH NGO
HST
2004-03-10

The Health Systems Trust (HST) announced today that Dr Lilian Dudley has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the organisation. Making the announcement, Chairperson of the HST board, Mr Patrick Masobe said, we are delighted to have somebody of Dr Dudleys professional standing and calibre to lead the organisation.

Her experience in supporting the strengthening of the public health system coupled with her commitment to equity and health system reform make her an impressive and visionary leader. Speaking on behalf of the Board, Masobe said: the Board extends its full support to Dr Dudley, and looks forward to a long and productive relationship as she leads HST in continuing and expanding its contribution to the development of a comprehensive, equitable and effective health system in South Africa, and in the region.

Dudley is a medical doctor who has specialised in public health and has post-graduate qualifications in health policy, planning and financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and London School of Economics. She has worked in senior management positions in local and provincial government, held the chair of the Public Health Association of South Africa, and has extensive experience in organisational management, policy planning and research.

Commenting on her appointment Dudley said, my mission over the next few years is to consolidate the achievements of my predecessor, Mr David Mametja, and to establish the HST as a leading health-system research and development organisation in the region. Citing overburdened health systems, exponential growth in the burden of disease exacerbated by chronic poverty and under-development as the most pressing public health issues, Dudley said, the HST will work in partnership with our government and other stakeholders to address the prevailing health needs of our country. We must look for solutions that are practical, sustainable and ultimately developmental, she commented.

Dudley served as Deputy and Acting CEO of the organisation over the past 2 years and has been responsible for steering the strategic direction and initiatives of the HST. I am fortunate enough to be working with a cadre of highly experienced and dedicated individuals both within the Board and the organisation and this can only maximise our contribution to developing an equitable health system in the country said Dudley.

The HST has been contributing to health system development in the country since 1992. They are responsible for producing a wide range of highly regarded research and policy related publications including the South African Health Review - an annual authoritative commentary on the state of health care delivery in the country. The organisation was awarded an Impumelelo award in 2004 for its innovative work in the field of poverty reduction and community development.
