Circumcised Men Less Infected With HIV/AIDS
Hafsah Nabayunga, The Monitor (Kampala) 2006-06-30
Kampala - Circumcised men are less likely to be infected with the HIV virus, the HIV/AIDS Sero-Behavioural survey 2004-2005 has shown.
Lack of circumcision is considered a risk factor for HIV/AIDS infection because of physiological differences which increase the susceptibility to the infection, the report said.
It added that circumcised men were 4% less affected compared to the 6% uncircumcised ones.
The report was launched by the Minister for Health, Dr Stephen Malinga , in Kampala on Monday.
It showed that HIV prevalence of 6.4 percent in the general population is still unacceptably high and it calls for the re-launching of the prevention strategies to promote risk reduction behaviours.
Malinga said the government was still committed to fighting the scourge with the help of donors. I argue all health development partners to team up with us in availing resources for HIV prevention, he said.
The report said the prevention strategy approach commonly known as ABC had continued to form the backbone of HIV prevention in the country.
This has been expanded in years to involve voluntary counseling and testing, antiretroviral treatment HIV/AIDS support and care services and prevention of mother to child transmission. (Source: Hafsah Nabayunga, The Monitor (Kampala) 21 June, 2006)
