SA nurses are staying put, even coming home
SUBASHNI NAIDOO
2006-07-31

THE number of nurses leaving South Africa has significantly declined, according to research by a private healthcare group.

Medi-Clinic nursing director Estelle Jordaan said that between January 2005 and April this year the group appointed 74 nurses who had returned from the Middle East and UK.

Jordaan said only 107 nurses had resigned to take up positions abroad during a similar period far fewer than the average of 3000 nurses who left South Africa every year during the 90s.

Jordaan said nurses who had left to work abroad were slowly trickling back to South Africa .

Among the reasons for the shift is that Europeans are now recruiting staff from countries such as the Philippines , a cheaper source of qualified nurses, the group said.

The findings are consistent with those of the Health Department, which reported a significant decrease in the number of SA nurses registered with the UK s Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Spokesman Sibani Mngadi said there were 2114 SA nurses registered in the UK in 2003, and only 933 last year, which he ascribed to government moves to limit the emigration of nurses.

However, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa said the main reason for nurses returning home from the UK was the high cost of living there.
