Netcare to give free screenings for heart conditions
Martina Nicholson Associates - Press Release - Netcare
2006-09-22

September is 'Heart-awareness Month and, in the interest of keeping the nations collective hearts pumping, private hospital group Netcare will be conducting free screening tests for anyone visiting one of their medical facilities on Thursday 28 September!

We want to make people aware of the risk factors associated with the development of cardio-vascular disease, says Dr Ryan Noach Chief Operating Officer of Netcare. As a result, we have launched a heart-awareness campaign that involves free screening for cholesterol, blood sugar levels, hypertension (blood pressure) and obesity (body mass index). Prevention is always better than cure!.

According to Noach, anyone who is interested in having their risk for cardio-vascular disease assessed can have it done, free of charge, at any
Netcare hospital, Medicross or Primecure Medical Centre on Thursday, 28 September.

People who participate will receive their results directly after the screening and will be informed should they have a risk for cardio-vascular
disease. They will also be advised to consult their GP for further treatment or investigation, should that be necessary, says Noach. People who were recently treated for cardiac-related conditions are also welcome, as we will be able to give them a free of charge health-update.

Most people are unaware of the fact that they have, or are developing, cardio-vascular disease as risk factors, such as high blood pressure,
develop without clear symptoms. According to Noach, high blood pressure is often referred to as the 'silent killer for exactly this reason. People
should, therefore, regularly screen their risk for developing cardio-vascular disease. When a cardiac condition is detected early, timeous
and effective treatment can make a world of difference to the health of the person involved.

Noach says that all Netcare hospitals, Medicross and Primecure Medical Centres are preparing to screen a projected 25 000 people on the day. There are many people out there who would normally not have access to such screening services, or never thought of the possibility that they may suffer from cardiac conditions, he says. It is our heartfelt hope that this initiative will have a significant impact in terms of cardiac disease
awareness, and the management of associated risk factors, for all South Africans.
