Health Systems Unit and Centre for malaria & tropical diseases, Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal has a vacancy for a Senior Researcher.


Vacancy for a Senior Researcher: Experience of African countries with Global Health Initiatives, a European Union funded project, with special focus on Angola and Mozambique.

The Health Systems Unit of the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical is part of a consortium of 7 academic partners in Europe and Southern Africa, to conduct research on Global Health Initiatives (2007-2010). Other partners are: Centro de Estudos Avanados em Educao e Formao Mdica-CEDUMED (Angola), University Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique), University of Pretria, University of the Western Cape (South Africa), Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine(Antwerp, Belgium), Royal College of Surgeons (Dublin, Ireland) Staring in September 2007, we will support research to document the effects if Global Health Initiatives in the health sector, in Angola and Mozambique. We will work in close collaboration with teams of researchers at CEDUMED and University Eduardo Mondlane in:
a) Reviewing the literature review on major global initiatives present in these countries
b) Developing research tools to document practices of these initiatives and their effects on national policies and planning
c) Training the research teams in methods of qualitative data collection and analysis, report writing, preparation of policy briefs and scientific articles
d) Linking with the other partners of the project to integrate the results of the country analysis.

The researcher will be based in Lisbon. The main tasks are:

  • To support the project coordinator in management of the project
  • To serve as a representative of the Portuguese partner at the various project meetings
  • To support the Angola and Mozambique teams at the levels of project development, training, field work, and writing-up of the expected deliverables.

    The initial appointment, at the level of Senior Researcher is for a period of 1 year, starting as soon as possible (preferably 1 September 2007), with the possibility of renewal until the end of the project in December 2010. The position is for three (3 days) per week, with the possibility of using the remaining time for participation in other activities of the Unit, such as other research projects, teaching, consulting. The position might interest persons willing to complete a PhD in parallel.

    Qualifications and skills required:

    • Masters degree in public health, or related field (political science, economics, sociology of development)
    • Familiarity with African health care delivery systems
    • Experience in project management
    • Good networking and teamwork abilities
    • Availability to conduct field visits to the countries included in the study
    • Fluency in English and Portuguese
    • Good writing skills in English, as demonstrated by publications.

    Salary and working conditions will be adjusted to qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
