Theme: Silicosis, a hidden epidemic amongst former gold miners in the Eastern Cape

The Health Systems Trust cordially invites you to attend a symposium aimed at initiating a dialogue on the plight of former miners in South Africa.

Your contribution to this symposium will not only mutually benefit all participants but will also help to find solutions to eliminate silicosis and improve occupational lung disease compensation mechanisms.

The Symposium will:

• Present the findings from a research study conducted amongst former miners in Eastern Cape (2008). Presenter: Ms. Jaine Roberts.
• Explore ways in which to strengthen the diagnosis of silicosis amongst former miners and identify barriers to the compensation mechanism as provided by the Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act (Act 78 of 1973).
• Discuss potential areas of collaboration.

Venue: Health Resource Centre, East London

Time: 09h00 -15h00

Delegates must make provisions for their own transport to the symposium.
