Distribution of Male Condoms in the Public Health Sector

Over 350 million male condoms are distributed annually on a demand basis by the Department of Health and, whilst access to male condoms is perceived to be relatively high, this has not translated into a reduction in HIV prevalence rates in the country.

In 2008/09 an average of 12 male condoms were distributed in South Africa per man 15 years and older. This reflects a very slow but gradual increase over the past four years from an average of 9 per man in 2005/06.

Of the ten districts with the highest distribution rates, five were from the Western Cape. Motheo district (FS) had the lowest male condom distribution rate in the country with an average of 4.3 condoms per man per year distributed. The City of Cape Town (WC) has had the highest male condom distribution rate over the past five years and distributed 47 condoms per man in 2008/09.
