Combivir approved by MCC

The anti-AIDS drug Combivir has been approved by the Medicines Control Council, manufacturer Glaxo Wellcome South Africa said on Tuesday.

Combivir, already in use in Europe and the United States, combines the antiretrovirals Retrovir (zidovudine) and 3TC (lamivudine) in a single tablet.

Glaxo said the combination drug was expected to be available in South African pharmacies by early next week.

The company's medical director, Dr Peter Moore, said the single tablet would simplify treatment for patients on antiretroviral therapy, who had been beset with complicated dosing regimens and a need to take many pills everyday.
