UCT, Children's Institute
The Children's Institute (CI) contributes to policies and
laws which promote equity and fulfil the rights of all children in South Africa.
Our work is aimed at the realisation of children's socio-economic rights with a
particular emphasis on children made vulnerable by inequity, poverty and
HIV/AIDS. We have a multi-disciplinary team conducting research, policy
drafting, teaching, training and advocacy. We are looking for four new staff
members to join the team.
With South Africa currently at a crossroads with regards to
the interpretation and realisation of children's socio-economic rights, it is
important to stimulate and enrich the legal and public debate around the
constitutional interpretation of these rights. The CI has initiated a project
aimed at engaging child rights experts, decision makers and service providers in
debates, facilitating the production of publications that elaborate on and
provide expert opinions on the interpretation of children's socio-economic
rights, and producing training packages for various audiences.
The Senior Researcher will be required to:
Conduct literature reviews, consult with child rights experts, and conduct
research on the interpretation of children's socio-economic rights
Write a range of publications, including peer-reviewed and popular articles,
and training materials
Present to a range of audiences and co-ordinate and facilitate small
roundtable discussions and a large national child rights research colloquium.
Masters degree in Law (constitutional law will be preferred)
- Demonstrated constitutional law research experience, skills and
publications (an interest in children and socio-economic rights will be
- A good understanding of the South African political system and familiarity
with the children's sector/child rights movement.
- Ability to research and conceptualise innovative ways of realising
children's socio-economic rights
- Good communication and presentation skills
- Excellent writing and editing skills
Annual package range: R120 000 - R165 000
All positions are offered on a one year contract basis. The
final annual packages are dependent on the successful candidates' qualifications
