Summary Between 23 and 26 July the Equity Gauge project of Health Systems Trust organised a site visit and workshop in the Northern Cape on local government and health. This initiative brought together national and provincial parliamentarians, local government politicians, local and central government officials and other experts.
More Details

The department of provincial and local government has completely overhauled the appearance of local government. Comprehensive restructuring, redrawing of boundaries and radical legislation have significantly impacted on the functioning of local government. It is these complex changes that propelled the Equity Gauge Project to organise this workshop for legislators, councillors and officials in local government to exchange views and to share experiences.

Participants focused on the major elements of local government reform:the impact of local government transformation, the devolution of services, and financing of health services.Subsequent discussions revolved around problems arising out of the devolution and transfer process as well as the key challenges facing the various stakeholders.
