Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, are a leading public health problem in most developing regions and sub-saharan Africa in particular. (1-3) poor STD control in these countries has severe consequences of which enhanced HIV transmission and an increased incidence of STD related sequelae are most immediate. (4) Women with STDs often have a symptomatic infection and are at particular risk because of severe sequelae and the inaccessibility of services. |
