Recent political changes within South Africa, and the new Constitution have reinforced the recognition of equal rights and opportunities for all citizens. If this is to become a reality for disabled people, if they are to have equal access to health and education and other rights, then the necessary support services - including assistive devices - need to be provided. The need for more research in this area has been identified in the National Integrated Disability Strategy Document (RSA 1996), and to this end, Disabled People South Africa commissioned this study, with financial support from the Health Systems Trust.
