SENIOR ACCOUNTS' ASSISTANT


PURPOSE:

The Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint a Senior Accounts' Assistant, based in the Durban office, to provide financial and accounting technical support to programmes and projects as required for the implementation of various tasks.

This is a fixed-term contract position, renewable based on availability of funding.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Finance Manager in establishing and maintaining appropriate internal controls and reporting systems;
  • Assist with preparing reports for Finance and Audit Committee meetings;
  • Ensure that policies, procedures, standard operating procedures and guidelines are applied and adhered to in day-to-day operations, and bring non­compliance to the attention of the Finance Manager and Compliance team;
  • Capture payments on the online banking system;
  • Assist with payroll verification and reconcile monthly data against the ledger;
  • Handle donor and funder queries within stated timelines;
  • Assist the Senior Accountant in managing staff and processes to ensure that contributions to reports are submitted on time;
  • Submit all statutory returns within mandated deadlines, and prepare and reconcile monthly VAT calculation and workings;
  • Review monthly management accounts and Trial Balance records, and submit feedback to staff on any remedial action required;
  • Assist in ensuring that the Fixed Assets Register is maintained, updated and reconciled monthly to the ledger;
  • Assist in developing annual and mid-term budgets with assistance from the Finance Manager;
  • Support the Business Development Unit with budgets for proposals and grant applications; and
  • Support the Finance Manager with regards to internal, external, statutory and funder audit processes.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in bookkeeping to Trial Balance;
  • At least five years' experience as an Accountant, preferably in an NGO environment; and
  • A valid driver's licence.

Experience

  • At least five years' administrative work experience in an office environment; and
  • Experience in supervising a Finance team within the public health sector, non-government and corporate environments.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of data-capturing and analysis, and bookkeeping to Trial Balance;
  • Skills in financial report-writing;
  • Knowledge of payroll preparation and reporting;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • Proficiency in Sage Evolution;
  • Excellent command of English, both verbal and written;
  • Good planning and organisational skills, with attention to detail;
  • A deadline-driven demeanour and the ability to multi-task; and
  • Professionalism and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

 

REMUNERATION

​​​​​A salary package commensurate with the successful candidate's experience and qualifications and in line with HST's job grading system will be offered.
